Here is a 3D character that I made from a doodle in my sketchbook. I made a base mesh in Maya and sculpted him in ZBrush, then rendered him in Mental Ray. The sculpting/texturing took about 4 hours.
The render uses IBL FG GI and Caustics.
I think this is a steampunk tangent, maybe like a reverse myth about portable TV or Technicolor? I dunno, just seemed like a fun idea.

He is 4104 Tris, complete with Normal, Texture+Baked AO, Emissive and Spec Map.
